![]() An adult male swan is a cob, from Middle English cobbe (leader of a group). Swan comes from the Indo-European root “swen” (to sound, to sing). Swans in flight would have a shape similar to a wedge. Wedge comes from Middle English, Old English and Proto-German, and means a simple machine made of metal or wood, thick at one end and tapering to a thin edge. If they are flying in a V, a group of swans is called a wedge. It is possible that the original sense of the word could be a company of birds gathered at a puddle or pool for drinking or bathing. The word might have come from the Old French bievre, (same root as beverage). Bevy, according to is a word of unknown origin that comes to us from the 15th Century. Your friends and bystanders will be overwhelmed with the precision and scope of your vocabulary. “Look at that bevy of swans,” you will say confidently, to the amazement and delight of those around you. You will be able to impress your friends. This is a good time to learn and practice swan terminology for next spring, when the swans return to M’Clintock Bay. Our swan friends, who have just left us for warmer destinations (or are in the process of leaving), are a good place to start. ![]() Let’s take a look at some of the collective nouns of the wildlife we see in our own backyard, as well as some further afield. Not every list agrees with the collective noun for the specific species, much like a dictionary is a catalogue of accepted meaning, For example on one list a group of swans is called a bevy, in another it is called a gaggle, which is also a word used to describe geese. Some of the collective nouns have to do with the action of the group, such as a leap of leopards, or a murmuration of starlings. Over the past 500 years, several lists of collective nouns have been created. The invention of the printing press, and the several printings of the book, of which only three copies remain, kept the excitement alive. Some of these names were collected in The Book of Saint Albans (1486), attributed to Juliana Berners, thought to be a nun. This game became adopted as common practice for a couple of centuries. In his book: A Conspiracy of Ravens, Bill Oddie states that in the Late Middle Ages, a hunting fraternity began a game of inventing animal group names. It’s interesting to trace the origin of the idiosyncratic collective nouns. More common collective nouns are a pod of whales and a pride of lines. ![]() Collective nouns are the names of groups of things: family, nation or flock.Ĭollective nouns can be rich and varied – especially for birds and other animals (school of fish) – that describe their particular grouping. Here is a rudimentary grammar lesson: nouns are the names of people, places or things: toddler, island or bird. Swans, hummingbirds and penguins, for example, have more than wings and feathers in common.

For pilgrims preferring the inland route, the crossing is made through the Medieval Bridge of Barcelos, constructed between 13. ![]() Currently, the crossing which replaces the barges in both the Coastal and the Coastal derivation of the central way is made through Ponte de Fão, built in 1892, heading to the Neiva Castle, currently lost, the Neiva was a Castro culture hillfort and early medieval castle. The Portuguese King Sancho II made the crossing there during a pilgrimage in 1244 and centuries later King Manuel I did the same in 1502. The Brotherhood of Barca do Lago stated in 1635: "this passage is very popular and it is for more than 400 years in our peaceful possession". After leaving the monastery, the crossing of Cávado River was made using barges landing in Barca do Lago, which literally means "Lake's barge". ![]() It is part of Roman Via Veteris and known in the Middle Ages as Karraria Antiqua (the old way), as such the bridge has Roman origin. It was (re)built in 1185 for an easy cross of the Ave river by medieval pilgrims. On the way to the Rates Monastery there is the medieval Dom Zameiro Bridge. The legend holds that Saint James ordained Peter as the first bishop of Braga in the year AD 44. The way has been used since the Middle Ages and the ancient monastery of Rates (rebuilt in 1100) gained importance due to the legend of Saint Peter of Rates. Rates is considered a central site of the Portuguese Way. There are two traditional routes from Porto, one inland (the Central Way) and the Coastal Way ( Caminho da Costa). Using Roman roads, pilgrims headed to Coimbra and had to reach Porto before night falls, as the gates of the city closed, once in the pilgrims headed to Church of São Martinho de Cedofeita (c. The route is 610 km long starting in Lisbon or 227 km long starting in Porto. It is the second most popular way, after the French one. From Porto, along the Douro River, pilgrims travel north crossing the Ave, Cávado, Lima and Minho rivers before entering Spain and then passing through Padron before arriving at Santiago. This tessellation consists of interlocking rectangles which contain the fish and boat images. Subsequently, his pictures contained more shapes, which were often transformed by reflections, rotations and translations. In 1936, Escher made a second trip to Alhambra. Rather than drawing what he saw, Escher started to express ideas he had in his mind, creating spatial illusions and detailed repeating patterns. Gradually, Escher's work began to change. However, on a visit to Alhambra in Spain, he became fascinated by the Arabic tessellating patterns contained in the tiles, and started to experiment more with shapes and mirror images. Born in 1898, initially he concentrated on sketching scenery and surrounding objects. This in itself makes a lovely investigation for children.Īnother remarkable man who contributed enormously to the study of tessellation was the Dutch artist M.C.Escher. The two shapes are both parallelograms and the tessellation is often referred to as "Kites and Darts" :Īlthough there are small repeated sections, there is no single unit which can be copied to fill the plane. Amazingly, he managed to reduce this to only six, then just two. Using only pencil and paper, Penrose found such an arrangement but it contained many different shapes. This kind of tessellation became known as quasi-periodic, in other words at first glance there appears to be a repeating pattern, but in fact He began by investigating combinations of shapes which would produce a repeating unit, but this led on to a search for a pattern with no repetition. While studying for his PhD at Cambridge, Penrose became fascinated by the geometry of covering a plane. Octagons and squares can be arranged to form a semi-regular pattern: The image that we are likely to think of is known as a regular tessellation, where all the shapes are regular and of the same type, for example:Ī semi-regular tessellation is made up of two different regular shapes and each vertex (i.e. Traditionally, the pattern formed by a tessellation is repetitive. Two people have principally been responsible for investigating and developing tessellations: Roger Penrose, an eminent mathematician, and the artist, M.C.Escher. Tessellations are a common feature of decorative art and occur in the Presumably this is an indication of the fact that tiles of this shape are the easiest to interlock. The word tessellation itself derives from the Greek tessera, which is associated with four, square and tile. Tessellation is a system of shapes which are fitted together to cover a plane, without any gaps or overlapping. And of course, there is so much maths involved! It seems a golden opportunity to link art with maths, allowing the creative side of your children to take over. There is so much scope for practical exploration of tessellations both For many, this is their preferred method of learning and, in general, it engages pupils more effectively. So often in the classroom we try to make activities more enjoyable for the children by varying our teaching to include a more tactile or "hands on" approach. Which is an idea never explored by Escher and others and up to the publication of my book in 2005.'Why tessellation?' you may well be asking. A full chapter is also dedicated to tiling with words, Many colourful tiling examples are illustrated throughout the nine chapters. The only necessary tools for creating objects, animals or humanīeings are a pencil, an eraser and some paper. My method use the 35 basic polygons (or so-called isohedral) that do not have rectilinear sides or central symmetry. Using English from school (in the sixties!) and a not very good translator, let the readers be indulgent with my Having recovered my author's rights, and at the request of many «tessellators», you can now find its full content, in FrenchĪnd in English, under the heading "Tessellation Method". My book, published in 2005, is now out of print. This is the reason why I had published "Parcelles d'infini" in 2005 in order to propose a method much better adapted in practice, simple and accessible to all, adults and childrenĪlike. However, the use of the usual 17 symmetry groups in the plane in crystallography is complex and, historically, has been poorly adapted. This process requires imagination rather than artistic qualities or geometrical knowledge. Among the disciplines that come from a mixture of Mathematics and Art, figurative tiling is the most fascinating of all, as there is something magical in seeingĬomplex identical forms assemble without leaving any gap in between them into infinity. ![]() ![]() Where I live in Kent, the Luftwaffe simply followed the incredibly straight railway line from Dover-London (originally a Roman Road) but common opinion is that many pilots dumped their payloads over the Kent countryside rather than risk flying into London itself where they might easily engage with the RAF or crash into the numerous anti-aircraft air balloons. The Blitz Spirit was born from 1941 onwards. My mum - an aeroplane engine mechanic -actually survived the bombing of the converted Rolls Royce car factory, in Crewe. My dad's family lost their entire home and my mum's family were air wardens and patrolled during the Blackout. The aerial attacks finally came in 1941 during the Blitz.
